NEW CD "QUEEN'S HOTEL" RELEASED SEPTEMBER 15

WELCOME

January 15, 2010

Howdy Folks,

I recently found an old school assignment I completed in Grade 6.  Why I have it, I have no idea.  The assignment was to write a paragraph on what the world would be like in the year 2000.  I included the obligatory references to flying cars and food in pill form and living in space with other aliens but the one line that really grabbed my attention was the last line.  I quote:

"In the year 2000 I will be 32 years of age and that is really, really old.

Well, now it's 2010 and I'm sure you can do the math.  I still don't feel old yet so I am grateful for that.

We are half way through a little four date tour releasing the new CD "Queen's Hotel" to Alberta.  Thanks to all who showed up to the Queen's Hotel in Fort Macleod on Wednesday and The Slice last night.

We have two more shows left.  One tonight in Calgary at Fish Creek Concerts...please note that start time is 7:30 NOT the 8:00 previously stated on this website.  The last show on Saturday in Edmonton at the Northern Lights Folk Club (but sorry this show is sold out).  Tickets to the Calgary show can be had at http://www.fishcreekconcerts.com/

We'll that's about it for now.

December 6, 2009

Howdy Folks,

If there were an award given to the musician who is best at neglecting his website, you may be looking at the Grand Prize Winner.

Before I tell you what I've been up to I want to remind all you folks in Alberta that the Highway 3 Roots Revue will be touring the province from December 10 - December 19.  HWY 3 consists of yours truly, Leeroy Stagger, and Dave McCann.  All dates, venues, and contact info are on the "LIVE" page.

I was in California for two and a half weeks in October and well....it was warm.  I swam in the ocean each day and the locals thought I was a crazy man but once they found out I was Albertan and a regular swimmer of glacier fed lakes and rivers, then they got it, sort of.  Met some great people and ate some serious mexican food.  YUM!  I didn't wanna leave.  Thanks to all who came to a show.

Went to New York state next and played in New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania.  Spent three days in NYC, mostly in Manhattan.  What an intense city. Saw the sights:  CentralPark, Times Square, Statue of Liberty, Carnegie Hall, Rockefeller Centre, Empire State, and Wall Street.

Queen's Hotel continue to get great reviews and I am grateful to all who have taken the time to review it and say nice things.  I will post some more reviews when I get a second.

We'll that's about it for now.

Howdy Folks,

Queen's Hotel hit the Earshot! charts this week at #1.  It is #3 on this week's CKUA charts, and #7 on the CJSW Folk charts.

It also received another review from BabySue.com.  Here it is:

Queen's Hotel (CD, Black Hen Music, Folk/pop)

The fourth full-length release from John Wort Hannam. Hannam used to teach but in the mid-1990s he heard an album by Loudon Wainwright III that changed his life. Shortly afterward he bought a guitar and began making music. Produced by Steve Dawson (an incredible artist whose music we highly recommend), Queen's Hotel is chock full of pensive folky/pop with a smooth organic sound and feel. Interestingly, the album was recorded almost entirely live...only a few harmony vocals were later added. In addition to Hannam, the players include Dawson on dobro, John Reischman on mandolin and mandola, Rob Becker on upright bass, Geoff Hicks on percussion, and Jeanne Tolmie, Tyler Bird, and Jenny Whiteley on backing vocals. In an age of throwaway music, the tunes on this album come across like crystal clear mountain water. Smooth, cool, credible cuts include "With the Grain," "Church of the Long Grass," "Worth a Damn," and "Lucky Strikes." (Rating: 5+)

Here's a little impromptu video with the guys singing "Lucky Strikes" at the historic jail in Bruno, Saskatchewan.

We'll that's about it for now.

Howdy Folks,

Queen's Hotel received yet another review.  Here it is:

QUEEN'S HOTEL
John Wort Hannam
Black Hen Music
9.25-out-of-10

It was October 2007 when I had the pleasure to review John Wort Hannam's disk Two Bit Suit. I liked it a lot, giving it a 9-out-of-10.  Hannam is back with Queen's Hotel, a disk that was released to the public only yesterday (Sept. 15). Guess what, this talented Canadian artist has not lost a step with this disk.

Of course why would we expect anything less. Hannam is now a veteran of the recording studio, with Queen's Hotel his fourth disk. The maturity shows through on this disk. There simply aren't any missteps here.  The opening song, With The Grain, sets the pace here. It has compelling lyrics, has a perfect arrangement, and John Wort Hannam's voice is clear, inviting – just excellent.  The strength of the first song sets a very high bar for Queen's Hotel, but Hannam is up to the task.

Perhaps the key here is that the music comes off real. That 'feel' is helped along by the recording process. The CD “was recorded live off the floor at Vancouver’s The Factory. Musicians sat in one room facing each other in a circle and played the songs – no bed tracks, no click, and no overdubs except for a few harmonies,” explained Hannam's website.  This is a CD rich in wonderful music.  I have to say growing up in Saskatchewan where small towns are still a vital aspect of the culture, the song Requiem For A Small Town is most touching, and becomes a favourite here.  Come Back To Me is a truly beautiful piece, with a sort of mournful, haunting element, which seems ideally suited to Hannam's voice.  Church of the Long Grass is a hit. It is two parts country, one part folk, and in the end is just all great.

This CD is every bit the equal of Two Bit Suit, in fact maybe just a fraction ahead, the reason for the funky score for fun. This is simply one you should own.

Howdy Folks,

Queen's Hotel received another nice little review in the Ottawa Citizen and even though Patrick thinks I was born in Alberta, I really appreciate the review.  Here it is:

On his fourth album, Alberta-born Hannam reminds us why, among other achievements, he’s a three-time grand prize winner in the Calgary Folk Music Festival’s Songwriting Competition. Relaxed as a country porch and a darn good wordsmith to boot, he ambles through love stories, mourns a failing small town and sings about the homesickness of a faraway sailor. Hannam and his first- class accompanists recorded the album sitting in a circle and largely eschewed fancy overdubs and such, partly accounting for the album’s fresh, concert-like presence. Call him a folk musician if you choose, but there’s more than a little country in Hannam, giving some of his tunes an ache that resonates as only a country song can.

-Patrick Langston

The Alberta Treasury Branch is featuring John on their website.  John is performing at The Esplanade in Medicine Hat on Sept 26th as part of the Big Rock Untapped Series sponsored by Big Rock and the ATB. See the concert listing for details and  check out John on the ATB website.

We'll that's about it.

Howdy Folks,

Queen's Hotel was officially released today on the Black Hen label and the record debuted at #3 on Canada's national campus and communty radio charts Earshot!.

Listen to samples and Buy Queen's Hotel here

I'm thrilled about the reviews that have been coming in.  Here is another from No Depression out of Montreal.

John Wort Hannam is a relative newcomer to music. He spent years teaching English on the country’s largest native reserve deep in the Blackfoot confederacy until a fateful encounter with a Loudon Wainwright III record inspired him to buy a guitar and learn a few chords. Ten years later, ‘Queen’s Hotel’ is Hannam’s fourth album and the second one produced by Steve Dawson, the hardest working man in Canadian roots music.

Queen’s Hotel is an instantly likeable collection of songs that is blessed with a wide open, recorded off the floor feel, and like all of Dawson’s productions there are many instrumental highlights and breath taking musical moments.  In particular, the interplay between Hannam’s voice - tempered by his clear ringing guitar - and the rest of the band is delightful to listen to from beginning to end.

Hannam writes about what he knows and through the course of eleven songs, listeners are treated to his heartfelt ruminations on life, work and love in the twenty first century. While Hannam may lack some of the lyrical depth of – say – Bruce Cockburn or The Deep Dark Woods, there is something very likeable about the persona he presents in his songs. To that end, Queen’s Hotel is surprisingly successful and there’s not really a dud or clunker track on the record. In fact, it would be safe to say that the opening track ‘With the Grain’ is a near perfect song. Light and breezy, yet imbued with an undercurrent of yearning, it embodies all that is good about Canadian roots music. I can’t stop listening to it.

Queen’s Hotel may turn out to be the sleeper album of the fall of 2009. It is a relaxed and endearing affair that will grow on you with repeated listenings. Definitely worth checking out.

We'll that's about it.

September 07, 2009

Howdy Folks,

I know this is short notice but if you live in Alberta from Calgary south then you can watch a news story about me and the new CD, songwriting and fence building on Tuesday September 8th at 6:00 and 11:00 pm on the CityTV channel.

I'll be heading to Europe for the first time in April and May of 2010 with my good friend and roots musician extraordinaire Gordie Tentrees.  Look for dates in Germany, Holland, England, Scotland, and Ireland as soon as they are finalized.

On September 26th I also be playing, for the first time, at the Medicine Hat Esplanade.  Big Rock beer and the Alberta Treasury Branch are sponsoring five shows in Alberta and this one in the Hat will be one of them.

Lastly, check out this little video for Lucky Strikes made by Tyler  at the All Citizens Cafe in Bruno, SK.  My Ma always said I would end up in jail

We'll that's about it.

September 3, 2009

Howdy Folks,

Here is a review of John's new CD "Queen's Hotel" from Discorder Magazine in Vancouver.

JOHN WORT HANNAM - Queen's Hotel (Black Hen Music) Review by Melissa Smith

Recorded live off the floor while contributing musicians played in a communal circle, this cozy setup has permeated the sound of Hannam’s fourth release—and you’ll find yourself intuitively singing along to songs you’ve never heard before. Although Hannam resides in Fort MacLeod, Alberta (of which vintage photos grace both covers and the liner notes), Queen’s Hotel has quite a connection to our precipitous city. In addition to being recorded here, his label, publicist, recording engineer and producer/contributing musician Steve Dawson all call Vancouver home.

As you might expect from a man who was once a language arts teacher (until hearing Loudon Wainwright III inspired him to pursue a career in music) storytelling played a huge role in the formation of this album. Opener “With the Grain” is a song about forging your own path in life, while “Worth a Damn,” an upbeat duet with Torontonian Jenny Whiteley, effectively utilizes metaphor to communicate need. But like all good storytellers, Hannam realizes that skill lies not just in the tale, but in the telling as well. “Come Back to Me” offers the poetic line “Where you stood the stars would shine just a little bit brighter” but when he sings the poignant chorus “Come back, come back, Oh come back to me my dear,” the moment is so exquisitely beautiful in its simplicity that it almost breaks your heart.

While Hannam’s music is classified as folk, it definitely has at least a few toes tapping the country border. Atmospherically Queen’s Hotel shares that sense of heartfelt integrity and compellingly immediate familiarity that has made Blue Rodeo a national treasure. It’s country music’s timeless heroism of the working class, but coupled with enough folk inspired idealism to dispel any notion of bar room brawls from creeping in.

We'll that's about it.

June 30, 2009

Howdy Folks,

I really need to be better about updating this site.

I guess the first news is that the new CD is done.  It is called "Queen's Hotel" and will be out in the fall.  The release date has not been determined quite yet.  Here is the cover and you can listen here to the song With The Grain

With Steve Dawson once again producing, “Queen’s Hotel” was recorded live off the floor at Vancouver’s The Factory.  Musicians sat in one room facing each other in a circle and played the songs – no bed tracks, no click, and no overdubs except for a few harmonies.  It captures a realness that sounds less like musicians making a record and more like musicians making music that just happened to be recorded.

With many of the same players:  myself on guitar and tenor guitar, Steve Dawson on dobro, national, and weissenborn, John  Reischman on mandolin and mandola, Rob Becker on upright bass, Geoff Hicks on percussion, and Jeanne Tolmie,Tyler Bird, and Jenny Whiteley on backing vocals, “Queen’s Hotel” has a pared down and subtler sound compared previous recordings and leans more on the folkier side of the folk/roots spectrum.

Highway 3 Roots Review (myself, Dave McCann, and Leeroy Stagger) are planning another December tour of Alberta.  Dates will be posted as soon as they are finalized.  Highway 3 will be playing the Canada Day celebrations at Prince's Island in Calgary.  We are at the Global stage at 3:15 pm.  See you there.

The John Wort Hannam trio (myself, Tyler Bird, and Scott Duncan) will be driving east in August as we perform at the Live from the Rock festival in Red Rock, ON.  We will be playing a few shows on the way out there and also on the way back.  Again those dates are being finalized now and will be up shortly.  I am currently booking dates so contact me if you would like to host a show.

We'll that's about it.

April 24, 2009

Howdy Folks,

I wanted to let all know that the concert that the John Wort Hannam band did in my home town of Fort Macleod on Feb 13th, 2009 (and recorded by the CBC) will be broadcast tomorrow, Saturday April 25th on The Key of A.  If you live in AB this program is from 5 to 6 pm on Radio 1010 AM.  If you live outside the province, then you can listen online

I am currently in the City of Brotherly Love, yup Philadelphia.  I have been in the area for a few days now and have ben checking out the sights of the first capital of America when the country was only a lonely 13 colonies.  So I saw the Liberty Bell (crack and all), the original Declaration of Independence (well, the second handwritten copy, written six hours after the first truly original copy), and Benjamin Franklin's grave.

I also figured I better not leave Philadelphia without trying the famous Philly Cheese Steak.  I gotta be honest, I don't get all the hype.  Maybe I went to wrong joint but it's basically, no not basically, it is, roast beef, onions, and melted cheese wiz on a hoagie bun.  Don't get me wrong, I love cheese wiz as much as the next guy but whether it's worthy of such praise?  I don't know.

I can rave about the hot dogs at Charlie's Pool Room in Alpha, NJ.  Joe and his brother John have been serving hotdogs (the only thing on the menu) for decades and it shows.  If you go, have what Joe and John call the mealies.  It is a fried hot dog, with onions and hot peppers and Joe and John's grandmother's secret sauce.  Delish!

Lastly on Thursday I went on a pilgramage to the Martin Guitar factory in Nazareth, PA.  The birthplace of my beloved Martin OM28 Marquis.  I took the tour and left my wallet in the glove box of my car in case any guitars wanted me to take them home.

We'll that's about it.

March 14, 2009

Howdy Folks,

The Highway 3 Roots Review is winding it's way across Southern Alberta.  Last night was a great venue that everybody in Alberta must visit - The Blackbird Cafe in Coleman, AB.  Come in and tell Kym we sent you.

Tonight is a sold out show in Twin Butte so if you don't have a ticket, sorry but you can't come unless you sneak in somehow.

Here is a review of the recent Two-Bit Tour.  Thanks for all who came.

* 7893 kms we driven in the old Chevy Astro van (Fort Malceod to St. John's Newfoundland is only 6476 kms)  You should see the van.  It looks exactly like you would imagine it would look after three guys have lived in a van for three weeks.  Hell, you should smell the van...

* We went through two oil changes, one set of brakes, a set of spark plugs, a set of wipers, a serpentine belt, one hose, and one heater,
four laundromats, 10 sets of guitar strings, a set of fiddle strings, and one guitar amp tube, a few bottles of this and a few bottles of that.

* Many rivers did we cross:  the Athabasca, Chaba, Pembina, Smoky, Little Smoky, losegun, Wapati, North Saskatchewan, Sturgeon, Belly, Bow, Elbow, Sheep, Highwood, Red Deer, Blindman, Old Man, and more that I can't remember.

* Played to great crowds in Fort Macleod, Grande Cache, Jasper, Athabasca, St. Albert, Banff, Josephburg, Medicine Hat, Elnora, Edmonton, Westlock, Calgary, Grand Prairie, Lloydminster, Daysland, Beaupre, Leduc, and High River.  We played some some cool old theatres, some cool new theatres, some rec centres, some community halls, a government building, and even the Medalta clay factory museum.

We'll that's about it.

February 26, 2009

Howdy Folks,

Me and the guys are about half way through our Two-Bit Tour.  We have nick-named the tour the Star of David Tour because when you plot out the dots of where we are playing and then connect all the dots it makes a lovely Star of David on the Alberta map.

So far we played two shows in Fort Macleod, Grande Cache, Jasper, Athabasca, St. Albert, Banff, Josephburg, Medicine Hat, and Elnora.

Just so you know the CBC Radio 2 was at our first show and I am told that it will be broadcast in March nationally on Canada Live and provincially on The Key of A.

So far, the van heater has crapped out a few times.  But don't worry, Tracy my mechanic told me to lift the hood and whack the black thing right behind the windshield fluid bottle and when I did, the heater came back on.  The serpentine belt also shredded but we got 'er replaced and other than that, all is good.

The last show on the Two-Bit Tour is March 07 and then I am back on the road March 12 with the Highway 3 Roots Review - Myself, Dave McCann and Leeroy Stagger.  Check out the dates under the "live" section.

We'll that's about it.

December 26, 2008

Howdy Folks,

Happy Boxing Day to all.  I got a Red Ryder BB gun and did not shoot my eye out.  Hope you all got and gave what you wanted.  Just so you know, my song Sweet Sweet Rose has been chosen to be on the Big Rock Untapped Compilation CD.  So sometime in January when you buy a case of Big Rock beer, a CD will be inside with 12 tracks from artists from across Canada.  My song is track seven.  The best part is that all artists receive a complimentary 30 cases of Big Rock beer.  So sometime in the second week of January there will be a party at my house.  You are all invited.

Don't forget to take a peek at the spring tour listed below.  I hope you can come.

We'll that's about it.

September 5, 2008

Howdy Folks,

Apparently I have been negligent in my website updates because it appears the last update was April. I have a pretty good excuse though but more about that later.

I wanted to tell you about some upcoming September shows that hopefully you will attend. The first two are this weekend September 6. The Alberta Government has designated September 6th the first official Alberta Arts Day. There are celebrations, concerts, viewings, readings, showings, and performances all over the province. You can go to http://culture.alberta.ca/artsday for a list of events. The Gala event is happening Saturday Night at the Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium from 7:30 pm to 9:30 pm. I am pretty damn excited to be playing one song with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra at the Gala along with Kris Demeanor and Johanna Sillanpaa. There are also performances from Asani, Troy Emery Twigg, The Swiftys & Dragon Fli Empire, Decidedly Jazz Danceworks and Alberta Ballet performing segments from Joni Mitchell's The Fiddle and the Drum.

Before this all starts I will be playing a solo show for one hour on Sept 6th at noon at the Mavericks Gallery at the Glenbow Museum, also an event in celebration of Alberta Arts Day. Although the concert is free, it is inside the museum and you must pay admission in order to attend the show. Museum admission for adults are $14.

Later in the month on September 26th I have been asked to be the Poet Laureate at the annual Peter Gzowski Golf Tournament for Literacy in Calgary. Although, I don't golf myself, I get to goof around the course and then write a song to be presented at the evening gala.

The following evening I will have the full band in Bragg Creek to perform for the Performing Arts Society. Info can be had at www.braggcreekperformingarts.com

Now, back to why I have been negligent in my website duties - I have been home two weekends since April 19th. This is not a complaint. I must say I enjoyed my summer very much, played more festivals this summer than I have played in total since I put out my first CD in 2002. I want to thank the North Country Fair, Canada Day in London Festival, Mariposa Folk Festival, South Country Fair, Calgary Folk Music Festival, Canmore Folk Music Festival, Edmonton Folk Music Festival, Fred Eaglesmith Charity Picnic Festival, and the Peterborough Folk Festival all for hiring me this year. I really appreciate it.

Well, that's about it,

john wort hannam

October 1, 2007

Howdy Folks,

Yikes, where did all those weeks go?

Glad to announce that I and "Two-Bit Suit" have been nominated for two Western Canadian Music Awards: Outstanding Roots Recording and Songwriter of the Year. The awards are handed out October 21st in Moosejaw, SK. I will be performing at the awards ceremony along with Kim Beggs (who is also nominated for Outstanding Roots Recording for her latest entitled "Wanderer's Paean").

The fall is showcase season and I and the trio will be all over the place: Chicago, Austin, London, Moosejaw, Banff (this showcase is open to the public; you should come visit www.artstouring.com for details), Portland, and Monticello.

The trio will also be at the Calgary Folk Club October 26, 2007. See you there.

Well, that's about it,
