I have news! On October 16, 2025, I was appointed as Alberta’s 6th Artist in Residence and Arts Ambassador for 2025–26. You can follow my travels at @ab_artistinresidence and my daily blog at johnworthannam.blogspot.com
The goal of my yearlong residency is to inspire empathy and compassion. My project entitled “Everyone Has A Story” is based on one simple truth: when we listen to each other’s stories, we connect and those connections build empathy and compassion. If we understand where our neighbours are coming from, particularly if our communities are diverse culturally, politically and/or religiously, then we can develop empathy and compassion for our fellow humans. With these powerful emotions, we can attain a stronger sense of community and more joyful lives.
“Everyone Has A Story” is a traveling, community-engaged songwriting initiative designed to offer accessible, participatory workshops to diverse public audiences. I am especially interested in the underserved rural and remote communities as well as Indigenous, and inner-city populations.
The project aims to guide participants through the creative process of songwriting—from idea generation to final presentation. My aim is to empower everyday Albertans to tap into their creative side and incorporate a creative practice into their daily lives.
And as someone who has struggled with mental health, I appreciate that research shows that people who include creativity in their daily practice have improved mental well-being and stronger connections and communications with fellow humans. According to a study published in Frontiers in Public Health, people who take part in creative activities report greater happiness, life satisfaction, and a sense of purpose than those who do not.
Music has an amazing way of bridging gaps between generations, cultures and people who would not normally cross paths. When we tell our stories and listen to those of others, we realize we have more in common than we thought.
